From the sky we dropped into the water for this initation. As pleasurable, soft, relaxed and comfortable as this retreat may have seemed, there were profound healings happening, magical situations occuring, offerings and blessings given and received. We are invited to stay together as a group, continue our bonding by bringing forth whatever you feel or left unsaid, here in the retreat gallery.
Mexico City was getting on my nerves, and into dreams; we parted from the days with the highest smog possible, nose bleeding and eyes hurting. Traffic, agressive driving and impossible street layouts kept the muscles tense until the release flight into the blue. There, in the sky, community bonding begun, all seated in front, getting to the heart and the place was a breeze. The van almost fit us all, but not the groceries according to Wendy, so it was her opportunity to skip the quite boring and loud beach club at Bacalar town and enjoy the house by herself, lucky her.
Our first dip was at night. With the new moon, the stars were the invitation to stay outside, looking at them. Tapas and cocktails accompanied our first rooftop gathering. The thing that stuck to me the most is how together the group was, wanted to be, they couldn’t miss being with each other. So there we were, talking about profound things, unveiling the magic from the view of the tree tops, stars behind, no city, no noises, no heat, no cold, all was temperate and flowing, perfect like the water.
Pu’ehr tea by the liter was the blessing at first opening of the eye, a couple hours into the day. Well rested we engaged the elements at the lagoon dock with the breeze caressing our skin whilst we streched with Qi gong and Mayan excercises I have learned from channeling. Then, the group got together to make breakfast, provided was abundant yogurt, all kinds of seeds, fruits and well-made eggs, coffee and the works. Brunch and dinner was the model that we would follow the coming days, to lessen the cooking and also deal with the heat that makes eating during the hot hours not the thing. First day of non-doing was in place, and it flowed well, settled the mood. We did not require extensive instructions as to how to behave, what schedules we would follow, who would do what and when. We simply flowed in being supportive, present and aware of everyone’s needs. Non-doing is the toltec excersise of seeking to behave and act differently, as in being weird on purpose, acting without previous thinking, stepping outside of the accepted behaviour. If done towards love, wonderful things can happen. Non-doing day for everyone was, to a great extent, making the most of the water, the entourage, nature, the hot weather, relaxation and comfort provided by the lagoon and house. I made my dip in the water but then, was the one that needed to do the doing. Cooking, organizing, documenting, sacred blessing and other chores rested on me and Mayra. I wanted to do the excercise and did when I figured that you can do chores in non-doing “mode”, where you find new and different ways to do them!
My relaxation was interrupted by the calling that I had heard the previous days. I was to make an offering, and a big one. Our recently adopted and beloved snail shell trumpet had been chosen by the gods to stay there and sing to us from the shallow depths. I summoned all at sunset where I was on time, well dressed, embarking on the kayak to the middle of the lagoon where in prayer and carrying inside it everyone’s offering, y dropped the shell to the bottom of mother water. Chants awaited me back, I saw the dragon of the lagoon, some others would too, the following days.
That first day ended with everyone gathering firewood to light the grill and make us some food. Homemade everything and, c’mon, yuca (mandioc) puree! That night was our big party, with tunes, guitar, songs and spiritual undressing we flowed into the night of talks about star mysteries. Music settled to deeper talks, turning the light off and merging together at the infinity pool. There the stars made revelations, we uncovered what we haden’t seen, comfortably bathed, talked about it and from there slowly and seamlessly dripped into our sleeps, not knowing the time…
Water day begun with Tea Gong. Dip, community making breakfast again, and then water healing. A class was given in the living room, which will be part of the circle of medicine courses. The class was also an introduction to the excercises and activities we would be doing that day. Using the water’s buoyancy and perfect temperature to allow the body to relax, each one chose a partner that would hold them and guide them through this therapy brought by nature. Meanwhile I scheduled everyone for a private session with me, and went through all of them during the remainder of the day. We met again together for dinner that night, same repertoire except we would want to get up early tomorrow for a venture out to Mayan temples and the beach. There was no need. Well revised, the schedule did not hold up to Sean’s scrutiny where he devised that we could comfortably do it all and not get up early whatsoaver.
So we did, a light breakfast and hopped in the odyssey towards Chacchoben. The noon sun was not that nasty and the trees at the site made it even nicer. The nicest thing about Mayan Archaelogical sites is that they are accompanied by mostly undisturbed tall growth forest, and that was so pleasing. The beautiful temples under the shade showed us the best side of this part of the world. It was that beautiful, living like the mayas makes so much sense. We had the site to ourselves, otherwise it’s visited by troops of cruise ship guests, who storm in by the hundreds at once. Plenty of time was left for the hour cruise to the beach. Seafood plated us and I hurried to use my time to fight agains that windy set of days that were making current and waves that made me take almost an hour to get to the coral reefs. I had a glimpse at the biome where I feel most comfortable in. I Hope I can go back soon. The beach bewitches me like nothing else, and I’ve been skipping all the tales from the wizardy and magic that was being dealt in the house. We had to go back to it and did. With time to end our night again, at the rooftop pool.
Crocodile tears dampened the next morning. It was our last full day there. The next one was about rushing back to the airport, damn flights! Tea to breakfast to class. What is making all of this happen? What are we here truly for? I begun that story and don’t know how long I will continue telling it. I thank everyone here and there for listening, I have never had such a beautiful space and audience to speak to from the heart like I did. I hope the recording survives to be seen. Having my words said, the excercise for that day was going to the forest and speaking with the trees. On the other hand I went to the car to drive to town for shopping. Of all the things we did bring, I did not find fish and seafood. Can’t miss that! I got very little feedback so far from what happened to everyone during that excercise. A couple of participants told me, Mayra especially: she is still having troubles now because the monkeys bewitched her! By then I was back to cook and deal with the matter. Personally I was happy the monkeys were around, I even left some food for them. For the hairless monkeys I prepared my best fish ceviche, gaspacho and a thai seafood coconut and tamarind soup. It was pretty narley! Good way to end the beauty. Next up was going back to whatever the not this great we are in now.
With the sun we rose back to the land of mordor. I’m glad that it went so well for everyone else there. They hanged out at the best bars where the cool mexican influencers go (is that a thing?) and ate at the best taco joint I will be officially certifying with the complete seven stars must-go-to-before-death review in Native Journey Travel Reviews. How corny. But hey, I’ve lived in many places and eaten a lot of tacos and took me this long to find them!
